1863 How it all began ...
The 26 October 1863 is an important date in the history of football. On this day a meeting was held in London. The following day the Times published an interesting football story.

It starts -
Football. - Last evening a meeting of the captains or other representatives of the football clubs of the metropolis was held at the Freemans Tavern, Great Queen-street, Lincoln's Inn-fields. Mr. Pember, N.N. Kilburn, having been voted to the chair observed that the adoption of a certain set of rules by all football players was greatly to be desired .....
On 26th October 1863 the Football Association was formed

First professional played for England - James Forrest of Blackburn Rovers - his fee was ten shillings (50 pence)

Clubs paying weekly wages wanted regular weekly matches. William McGregor of Aston Villa formed the Football League with Twelve of the best clubs in England. They were:

The first champions were Preston North End.

Ibrox Park Glasgow 25 people were killed. Part of the Stand collapsed during a Scotland England International match.

FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football) was formed. This is the world governing body of football.

Goalkeepers were ordered to stay on their lines for penalty kicks.

The First World Cup competition was held in Uruguay. No British team entered. The Cup was won by Uruguay.

Premier League introduced squad numbers and names on shirts adandoning the 1 to 11 numbering used since 1939.
Arsenal became the first team to win the FA Cup and the League Cup in the same season.

World Cup in Unites States of America. Brazil beat Italy in the final played in Los Angeles in a penalty shoot-out after a no goals draw.

Euro '96 hosted by England. The final was played at Wembley Stadium. Germany beat the Czech Republic 2-1 with a 'golden goal' in extra time.
England was knocked out in the semi-final against Germany losing 6-5 on penalties after extra time.

World Cup hosted by France - home of the French lawyer Jules Rimet who pioneered the first World Cup tournament in 1930.
France won the trophy for the first time by beating Brazil 3-0 in the final in Paris.

Queen Elizabeth's Golden Juliee Year
World Cup was hosted jointly by Japan and South Korea. The final was played in Yokohama, about 30 miles from Tokyo.
Brazil beat Germany 2 - 0 to win the trophy for the 5th time.

World Cup was hosted by Germany. Italy played France in the final which was staged in Berlin. Italy won 5 - 3 on penalty goals.
